Found! Paul Newman's 1995 Volvo 960 V8 With Puffer

For V8 Volvo nuts like us, finding Paul Newman's 960 for sale online is the equivalent of an archeologist finding Excalibur in a thrift store.  This supercharged wagon is stuff of legends and its story famously told on the air by David Letterman while being interviewed by John Stewart - read all about it from this 2003 story from Swedespeed later republished in 2010 via Jalopnik.  Cool Hand Luke himself passed in 2008 but the whereabouts of the "puffer" equipped custom was unknown...until now.  Paul Newman's 1995 Volvo 960 is for sale on cars-on-line.com for an undisclosed price, but with Auto Appraisal Network's 2011 appraisal of $95,000 attached to the ad.

5k: Jesse's Girl: 1974 International Scout Baja Truck

Preparing a truck for the Baja 500 race will cost tens of thousands of dollars in safety equipment without starting to budget for performance or the original vehicle.   The International Scout won't win any of the unlimited class races ruled by the big sponsored teams, but it should be good for a classic class or maybe just some mudding around a local swamp.  Find this 1974 International Scout Baja Truck for sale in Plaster City, CA for $5,000 via craigslist.

Suicidal Tendencies: Mexican Jet Pack

The concept of the jet pack was originally developed in the 1920's by a crazy Russian inventor named Aleksandr Fyodorovich Andreyev.  Rumors exist of Nazi's using functioning jet packs around WWII, but those are likely just rumors and the real first jet pack was created in 1958 by some American engineers.  Science fiction quickly adopted jet packs as transportation of the future and James Bond even flew one in the opening scene of Thunderball (1965), but the vision of cities congested with jet pack traffic has yet to become a reality.  That doesn't mean you can't pickup a new jet pack for about the price of a well optioned Toyota Camry.  Find this Mexican Jet Pack for sale in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico with a starting bid of $25,000 USD via ebay.

10k: Black Beauty: 1956 Mercedes-Benz 220S W180

The Mercedes-Benz W180 chassis was the S-Class of the day and put a smile on the faces of many wealthy businessmen when they rolled off lots between 1954 and 1959.  Today, a used driver class 220S won't require a lawyer's salary to buy, and was built well enough to be comparable in running costs to most domestic 50's cars.  The parts will cost more, but they should last longer.  Find this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 220S W180 offered for $11,000 in Monterey/Salinas, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

5k: Black Friday Mall Rat: 1986 Mercedes-Benz 300E W124 5-spd

Every year the malls are swamped on Black Friday with shoppers trying to get a good deal on worthless stuff they don't need.  Why should it be any different here?  You may not need another 80% restored mid 80's Mercedes in your driveway, but this one (with photos from a mall parking lot) looks like a good deal and is equipped with the uber rare 5-spd.  Find this 1986 Mercedes-Benz 300E 5-spd for sale in Los Gatos, CA.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

5k: Black Friday: 1958 Volvo PV544

Five thousand dollars isn't a lot to pay for a vintage running/driving 50s classic that isn't a total rust bucket or a VW Beetle.  You won't getting rich collecting Volvo PV544s, but for the price this could be considered a black Friday deal.  Find this 1958 Volvo PV544 for sale in Springfield, MO for $4,900 via craigslist. Tip from James C.

10k: JDM Export: 1988 Nissan Cefiro

Back in 1988 the 4-door Nissan mid-sized offering for the US market was the Maxima, at the time a rather unfortunate looking front-drive sedan powered by a wheezy V6.  On the other side of the Pacific Ocean, Japanese buyers could get the Nissan Cefiro, an R32 Skyline derived rear-drive sedan that later morphed into the front-drive Infinti I30 and A32 generation Maxima.  At least one of them found its way into the USA and at 25 years old, it is totally legit for import.  Find this 1988 Nissan Cefiro for sale in Richmond, VA for $11,500 via craigslist.

10k: Happy Thorsgiving: 2006 Volvo V70R Wagon 6spd

A Thorsgiving celebration would not be complete without the traditional razing of a barn, a game of moose pucky football and most importantly, the revering of turbocharged manual transmission wagons.  Many of the turbo bricks you will find on these pages are the product of madmen, blow torches and amphetamine haze, but this one is pure stock Volvo goodness.  Find this 2006 Volvo V70 R Wagon 6spd for sale in North Brookfield, MA for $11,995 buy-it-now on ebay.

5k: Happy Thorsgiving: 1963 Volvo L3314 Laplander Military 4x4

We at the Daily Turismo are sick of letting the Pilgrims get all the glory for the Thanksgiving long weekend celebration.  While all the "conventional historians" talk about Columbus discovering America and Pilgrims eating some silly lunch with Native Americans, we are surprised how few people know the real story of the first Thorsgiving.  It was a balmy Thursday circa 1000 ad when Leifr (son of Thjóðhildr and Erik the Red) landed in modern day Newfoundland and met up with a group of strangely dressed Pan-Asiatic nomads.  These "natives" and the viking ate a feast of lingonberry jam on pheasant and afterwards shared an ancient sketchbook to Leifr.  The book has been long lost in history, but to this day Leifr's descendants swear it contained crude drawings of V4 powered dog-sleds, 2-stroke engines with centrifugal couplings, boxy ox-carts, plans for underpowered 4X4 military vehicles and well....lots of nekkid people. Unconventional historians say that this chance meeting (aka the first Thorsgiving) led to a lineage that bred cars such as this 1963 Volvo L3314 Laplander Military 4x4 for sale in Auburn, CA for $7,500 via craigslist.  Thanks to the multiple tippers who sent this in, but Andrew MC was first!

5k: Rotary Swap: 1964 Sunbeam Alpine Series V, 12A Powered

DT reader Tom P wrote (in response to a story about a LS1 powered FD RX7) on our facebook page the following defense of Wankel's spinning combusion machine:
I am not sure where the continuous comments about rotary longevity come from. As long as you kept oil in them and did not sure stupid amounts of boost they last forever and when it is time for a rebuild it is usually cheap and easy. The LS1 is so much heavier than the original engine it ruins the primary traits I an RX7, light and super well balanced.
What better way to back up Tom's thoughts then with a Sunbeam Alpine powered not by a small block Ford or some unidentifiable V6, but by a Mazda rotary engine.  Find this 1964 Sunbeam Alpine Series V with Mazda 12A power for $3,900 located in San Jose, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

5k: Big And Tall: 1978 Chevrolet C10 Bonanza with 5.3 Vortec V8

Need a big, manly work truck with modern fuel injected power?  Don't spend all your hard earned cash on some late model soulless appliance, pick up a sweet looking classic from the '70s that has already had the hard work of an engine swap done by someone else.  Save that money for mustache wax and buy this 1978 Chevrolet C10 Bonanza with 5.3 Vortec V8 for sale in Guyton, GA for $6,000 via craigslist.

DTO: Iron Man Customs: 1982 Other Custom Steel Iron Car

The Iron Man character created by comic legend Stan Lee comes into being when a millionaire playboy and weapons engineer Tony Stark is kidnapped and forced to create a weapon of mass destruction.  Instead, he builds a first generation mobile armor suit and breaks his way free, people get blown up, et cetera.  Imagine for a minute that Mr Stark was an engineer at Carrozzeria Ghia and stuck in a hell-hole cave in whereveristan with access to a Lincoln Mk VI body and welding supplies...this is the Iron Car he would build.  Find this his 1982 Other Custom Steel Thing currently bidding on ebay for $26,600 in an undisclosed super secret underground lair via ebay.

5k: Hot Rod Lincoln: 1988ish Lincoln Mk VII LSC with Mustang Cobra Power

The Lincoln Mk VII was yet another Wixom, MI assembled Fox-body based two door from the Ford parts catalog.  The Lincoln was powered by the same 5.0 liter Ford Windsor V8 that was put into millions of other Fox-body cars, but the Lincoln never got the hopped up Mustang Cobra engine...until now.  Find this 1988ish Lincoln Mk VII LSC with Mustang Cobra Power for sale in Newport, NC.  Tip from Art C.

20k: My Maserati Does 185: 2002 Maserati Coupé GT 6-spd

The Giorgetto Giugiaro (of ItalDesign fame) designed Maserati Coupé was a product of a time when the prancing horse (Ferrari) held the reigns at the home of Poseidon's trident (Maserati). The Coupé used a Ferrari designed engine and was sold for less than the cheapest Ferrari - more of a competitor to the base model Porsche 911.  We've been counting the hours before these hit DT prices and then is now.  Find this 2002 Maserati Coupé GT 6-spd for sale in Marina, CA for $20,000 via craigslist. Tip from Kaibeezy.

10k: Sarah Palin's Dog Sled: 1999 Ford Expedition

In 1996 self-described hockey-mom Sarah Palin beat incumbent John Stein 651 to 440 votes in the Wasilla, Alaska mayor race.  Turnout could best be described as lackluster when you consider that Wasilla's population was 5,469 in the 2000 census.  Regardless, the small town purchased a 1999 Ford Expedition for the mayor and apparently this vehicle was used to shuttle her around for official and unofficial business.  Find this 1999 Ford Expedition for sale in Wasilla, AK currently bidding on ebay for $10,200 with a 1 day to go.

DTO: Funny Looking: 1972 De Tomaso Pantera Convertible

The De Tomaso Pantera (Italian for Panther) was a Tom Tjaarda (notable for penning the VW Karmann Ghia, Ferrari 365 GT California, Fiat 124 Spider, Ford Maverick, 82' Chrysler LeBaron, etc) designed coupe that used a mid engine mounted Ford 351 Cleveland V8 to push around its Italian built body.  The most famous Pantera is clearly the one that Elvis put a few rounds into after it wouldn't start, but the strangest looking award goes to this convertiblized Pantera.  Find this 1972 De Tomaso Pantera Convertible for sale in Encinitas, CA for $32,000 via craigslist.

PSA: The Daily Turismo Loves Porsche 914s

Public Service Announcement; After the deluge of hate mail, death threats and negative comments on our update on the 914 market, we want to make one thing clear;  we love 914s.  There is no way to not love cheap, good handling classics, and while the owners may have skin thinner than the rust prone 24-gauge sheet metal of their beloved 914, there is no need for additional threats.

15k: Commenter Written: 1993 Mazda RX-7 FD with GM LS V8

(Words and link from DT reader Bill Haworth, aka Tetsu_no_Usagi) The 3rd and last generation RX-7 is arguably the best looking generation of Mazda's rotary-powered, RWD sport coupes, but suffers the same stigma all the other generations did - rotary engines are not known for their longevity. What else are you going to do with a good looking RWD platform to make it more reliable and more powerful at the same time, except put in a LS bowtie motor? The venerable SBC (small block Chevy) V8 engine used to be a hefty lump of iron, heavy and prone to warping under high heat and stress, but no more! Find this 1993 Mazda RX-7 LS1 V8 for sale in Fitchburg, MA for $12,500 via norotors.com.

5k: Cheap Coffin: 1972 Volvo 1800ES Wagon

Volvo's 1800ES is a somewhat rare model, only sold in 1972 & '73 model years as a way to extend the life of the long-in-the-tooth 1800 coupe (originally known as the P1800, released in 1962). The funky looks can be polarizing - the Germans call this model Schneewittchensarg, which translates literally to "Snow White's coffin."  Whenever I tell someone it is a schneewittchensarg, they respond with gesundheit, which I am fairly certain was the German equivalent of Ed McMahon's "you are correct sirrrr."  Today's 1972 Volvo 1800ES Wagon is offered at a "correct price" and is for sale somewhere in Pennsylvania for $6,500 via swedish-motors.ebizautos.mobi  Tip from Ignatius Reilly

15k: SR20DET 5-Door: 1970 Datsun 510 Wagon

The Datsun Bluebird was badged as the 510 for the US market and sold from 1968 to 1974.  The 510 is an inexpensive used classic today and a great lightweight platform for modification.  Find this 1970 Datsun 510 wagon with Nissan SR20DET power for sale in Los Angeles, CA for $13,500 via craigslist.

5k: Tigerclone: 1967 Sunbeam Alpine V6

The Sunbeam Alpine was a 4-cylinder powered British roadster sold by the Rootes Group back in the 60s.  They even built a Carroll Shelby designed V8 version, the Tiger, but those are very expensive today and even total basket cases are astronomical.  Why not try the middle ground: an Alpine converted to run a Ford V6 engine?  Find this 1967 Sunbeam Alpine V6 for sale in the High Desert, CA for $6,500 via craigslist.
