5k: Seller Submission: 1984 Porsche 944

The Porsche 944 is one of those depreciated classics that only gets better with age.  They haven't started to appreciate like the 911, but expect the good ones to command higher prices in the coming years because they are easy to maintain/understand and great to drive.  Find this 1984 Porsche 944 for sale in Temecula, CA for $5,600 via craiglist.    Seller submission from David G.

15k: No Handicap: 2004 Volkswagen R32

The Volkswagen Golf MkIV was sold from 1999-2006 around the world, but it wasn't until the 2004 R32 edition that a true performance version was born.  The R32 took most of its components from the 3.2 liter Audi TT, including engine, transmission and suspension, but it maintains the Golf level of useability and is practically depreciation proof.  Find this 2004 Volkswagen Golf R32 for sale in Richmond, VA currently bidding on ebay for $13,700 with 1 day to go via eBay.

2k: Come And Get It: 1988ish Mazda RX-7 FC V8 Swap

The FC generation Mazda RX-7 was produced from 1986 thru 1991 and powered by the 13B rotary engine.  Unfortunately the 13B is about a reliable as a blind crossing guard and the resulting regular and catastrophic engine failures have created numerous cheap FC shells for sale.  Those shells often find themselves filled with cheap and powerful V8s...cue the burnouts & hooning.  Find this 1988ish RX-7 FC V8 for $2,200 located in Napa, CA via craigslist.  Thanks to tip from Jeffrey L.

5k: V8lvo Craigslist Trifecta: BERTONE CAPT'N CAPSLOCK vs Too Much To List vs No Engine/Trans

Surfing craigslist is often like negotiating a minefield totally naked and blindfolded.  Lunacy, incompetence, ignorance and insanity eagerly await each click of the mouse like the four horsemen of the apocalypse combing the manes on their ethereal steeds.  The four horsemen of craigslist made a particularly stunning appearance this week with a trifecta of V8 powered Volvos for sale across the country.  Pick your favorite as we compare a Bertone Coupe sold by CAPT'N CAPSLOCK with a 240 Wagon sold by Too Much Too List and finally a 760 Hot Rod with No Engine/No Trans.

5k: Midlife Crisis: 1987 Chevrolet Trolley Car

You are a slightly pudgy 40 year old with a wife and 2 kids. You've been working hard at your 8am-6pm career as a software tester and have recently been promoted to Junior Manager.  The 15 year old Nissan Altima you've been driving since before your 2nd kid was born is looking a bit sorry but you've managed to save a few dollars for a weekend car.  A sports car that would get you noticed sounds great, but they are impractical and you've always needed an RV for family trips...what if you could find something that would fit your extroverted needs and haul the family up to see aunt Bridget during August?  Find this 1987 Chevrolet Trolley Car for sale in Valencia, PA currently bidding on ebay for $5,400 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go.

3k: The Best Worst Driver's Car: 1995 Cadillac Eldorado

The Cadillac Eldorado was sold for a remarkable 50 years as a 2-door luxury coupe and was only discontinued in 2002 because GM started to refocus the Cadillac brand on nonsense like Nürburgring lap times and chasing BMW/Mercedes in the sport-luxury rat race.  Sure, the newer Cadillac STS is faster, sportier and meaner, but it lacks the one-finger "was that a speedbump?" ride/handling that made Cadillac a legend.  Instead of running ad campaigns that said "Hey, you're not on the damn Nürburgring, who cares about your lap time" Cadillac turned away from wealthy elderly luxury drivers (who oddly enough ran to the warm wallpaper paste embrace of Lexus) and baited the mid-life crisis seekers and speed demons.  Find this 1995 Cadillac Eldorado for sale in Glen Cove, NY for $3,500 buy-it-now from the original owner's son via eBay.

15k: New Camino: 1971 BMW 1600 Pickup, M20 Engine

According to internet lore famed GM design chief Harley Earl suggested a coupe pickup as early as 1952, but the Ford Ranchero beat the Chevy El Camino to market by a few years...it doesn't matter because for whatever reason, the El Camino name is "stronger" and has become generic for any coupe pickup in the same way that Kleenex is to tissues, Xerox is to photocopies and Detroit is to crime.  Therefore, if  you take one BMW New Class and El Caminoize it, you've got a New Camino.  Find this 1971 BMW 1600 El Camino with M20 engine for sale in San Francisco, CA for $16,900 buy-it-now on eBay.  Tips from Morgan H.

Feature Followup: Most Interesting Man's 1973 Porsche 914 On Way To Finland

In late June we featured a 1973 Porsche 914 being sold by Doug Malewicki, aerospace engineer gone rogue inventor, biker and all around nice guy.  The 914 sold for $6,700 to a buyer in Finland and as luck would have it, Doug wasn't far from DT HQ.  Doug kindly offered to buy us lunch on the way to dropping his 914 off at the shipper.  Doug picked up the tab (although he did bring a selection of coupons...hey, free lunch is free lunch, we aren't complaining!) and he shared with us a memorable lunch and an interesting graph of the auction results.

5k: V12 Depreciation Special: 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL600 R129

We posted a V12 powered BMW 850i last week along with a challenge to our readers to find something V12 powered and cheaper...of course the challenge didn't last long and the tips poured in like fuel into a V12 luxobarge.  BMW wasn't the only German manufacturer to offer a ultra high priced V12 tourer; Mercedes-Benz produced its SL600 from 1992 to 2002.  Find this 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL600 V12 for $6000 in Oakland, CA via craiglist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

15k: Almost A Sleeper: 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle Sedan Restomod LQ4 V8

The first generation Chevrolet Chevelle was based on GM's A-body platform and they are quite inexpensive in sedan form for a used classic daily driver.  Unfortunately the driving dynamics, performance & fuel economy of a stock Chevelle is going to leave a bit to be desired from someone used to modern cars...unless..you pick up a restomodded version.  Find this 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle sedan restomod with Chevy LQ4 V8 offered for $16,800 in San Jose, CA via craigslist.

How To Buy A Used Car: Step 4: Test Drive, Inspection & PPI Checklist

Step 4:  Test Drive & Inspection:  How to inspect a car in person (or by remote PPI) and how not to be taken for a ride on the first date.  We give you the goods on what to do when you take a look at the car you are buying -- including key items you always want to check and a detailed checklist of other things you need to look at.

You may have noticed that we published part 1 of DT's 6-part series on How to Buy a Used Car but we got busy with other things and have neglected to publish the next parts as promised.  We have no excuse other than being busy, but to the rescue comes Ian and Kim Lomax, founders of Jewel or Jalopy who offered to write up part 4...well...as they say in the vending machine industry...better out of order than out of mind!

5k: Olive Premix: 1966 SAAB 96 2-Stroke

The SAAB 96 was introduced in 1960 as a front drive streamlined styled descendant of the UrSAAB.  Proper capitalizing all of the letters in SAAB is well...proper...because it's actually an acronym, standing for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget which translates to Swedish Aeroplane Ltd. The early cars definitely had an aeronautical aura about them with blunt front, clean fuselages and teardrop tails.  Find this 1966 SAAB 96 2-stroke for sale in Merritt Island, FL currently bidding at $3,140 reserve-not-met on ebay with a buy-it-now of $6,500 with 1 day to go.  Update: This was submitted as a tip during the 50 car madness last week and commenter JPB is offering to test drive/inspect this car if necessary. See comment below.

20k: VTenor: 2007 BMW M5 E60 6-spd

The E60 generation BMW M5 was powered by a motorsports derived  V10, intended to link the BMW Formula 1 powerplant with something street driven, although in reality it shared zero components and architecture.   The E60 M5 was the fastest 4-door sedan available when new and it continues to be a brutally fast automobile even when compared to the latest from Germany.  Find this 2007 BMW M5 with 6-speed for sale in Phoenix, AZ for $23,900 or best offer via craigslist.

2k: Seller Sub: 1999 Plymouth Neon ACR

The Dodge/Plymouth Neon was a compact sedan from Chrysler, sold from 1995 through 2005 before it was replaced by the hideous and horrible-to-drive Dodge Caliber.  It is easy to dismiss the Neon as another crappy econobox, but the boys from Chrysler put out a few interesting models in the first generation, starting with the Neon ACR.  Find this 1999 Plymouth Neon ACR for sale in Norwalk for $2300, CT via craigslist.  Thanks to seller submission from Cory.

15k: Cheapvette: 1968 Chevrolet Corvette C3

The shape of the third generation Corvette was released to the public a few weeks early by a mistake in the Hot Wheels factory that shipped the 1968 Corvette shaped 1/64th scale models earlier than scheduled.  The body and interior were all new, but the basic C2 subframe carried over with few changes, as was the wild line-up of V8 engines.  Finding a cheap early C3 is still a crap shoot as restorations of the fiberglass bodies can be pricey and they will never command the prices of a C2...but for the Vette lover on the budget they do offer style and cool for the price of a used Kia.  Find this 1968 Chevrolet Corvette C3 for $14,000 located in Lincoln, CA. Another tip from Kaibeezy.

1k: Perfect Combo Of Rare And Average: 1980 Ford Fairmont, Survivor

Sometimes a tip comes with enough commentary from the sender to compose an entire post...so today's feature is written by tipper Andy L. In his words: I am sending you this car because it is both rare and yet the most completely average car I think I have ever seen.  If you asked an eight-year-old to draw a picture of a car with a red crayon it would probably look like this one.  Find this 1980 Ford Fairmont for sale on eBay in Des Moines, Iowa with 5 days to go.  Tip and text by Andy L!

DTO: Charity Auction: 2014 Kia Sorento EX; Justice League Graphics

Daily Turismo Omologato is a series where we feature unique cars that are well above the normal DT priceline, but are unique, interesting, zany enough that we can pass them up...think of it like DT Private Reserve Mountain Dew Code Red.  The Kia Sorento is a car based SUV/crossover family hauler built in West Point Georgia with seating for 7.  This 2014 Kia Sorento EX is decorated in a Justice League (Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman and some other tights wearing dudes) graphics sceme by DC Entertainment and is being auction on ebay with all proceeds going to charities, current bidding for $38,000 with a few hours to go.

2k: Collectors Item?: 1975 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega: Some Assy Required

In 1970 GM's General Manager per-incarcertion John DeLorean directed his engineering staff the develop a high performance cylinder head for the Vega 4-banger engine.  Within a few years a combination of GM's alloy block and a Cosworth Engineering designed head was mounted into a Chevy Vega that cost nearly as much as new Corvette.  In the August 1973 edition of Car and Driver magazine, one of the talking heads wrote "Cosworth Vega 16-Valve. More than an engine. A taut-muscled GT coupe to devastate the smugness of BMW 2002tii's and 5-speed Alfa GTV's. A limited run of 4000 machines, each one built away from the tumult of the assembly line to precision tolerances, as a show of technical force by Chevrolet. All of them will be collector's items."  Find this 1975 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega for sale in San Jose, CA for the bargain price of $2,500.  Tip from Jeffrey L.

10k: Restomod Goat: 1966 Pontiac LeMans, Chevy LS1 6-spd

The term restomod gets tossed around in gear head articles to describe a combination of restoration and modification of a classic car.  This 1966 Pontiac LeMans 2-door is powered by a modern Chevy LS1 V8 + 6spd (probably from a late model Camaro) with late model wheels and is offered for $8,500 via craigslist in Fremont, CA.

10k: LM744: 1985.5 Porsche 944; Chevy LM7 V8 Swap

The Porsche 944 was an experiment in the front-engine rear drive coupe format from Porsche and followed after the lowly 924 and lofty 928.  The 944 was only available with inline-4 cylinder engines and the turbocharged version was quick, but lacked the immediate oomph provided by a big lump of V8.  One easy way to fix that is...swap in the most plentiful modern small-block available. Find this 1985.5 Porsche 944 w/Chevy LM7 V8 for sale in Detroit, MI for $12,000 via craigslist.

10k: Hot Rod Lincoln: 1954 Lincoln Capri Coupe, Track Rat

The 1960 version of Hot Rod Lincoln is sung by Johnny Bond and unlike earlier versions of the song, his hot rod Lincoln has 8 cylinders instead of 12.  That is perfect for today's feature because we couldn't find a 12 cylinder hot rod Lincoln and had to settle for this V8 powered hunk of steel. Find this 1954 Lincoln Capri Coupe for sale in SF Bay Area, CA for $11,500 via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.
