5k: Warp Speed Soccer Mom: 2001 Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG W163

The W163 generation M-Class was a Mercedes-Benz SUV built for wealthy soccer moms and realtors...but the AMG version was a car that could be properly hooned by husbands and kids (okay, maybe some lunatic moms also like to drive fast...who knows).  The M-Class was used not only as Pope-mobile for two pontiffs (John Paul II and Benedict XVI; Francis prefers the bus) but was also the preferred vehicle for dinosaur herding duties in Jurassic Park.  Today they are cheap rides for the average Joe.  Find this 2001 Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG W163 for sale in Marietta, GA for $7395 via craigslist.

This ML55 AMG cost more than $70k with options when new, but today you can pick it up for 1/10th of the original cost. The ML55 AMG is powered by a 5.4 liter V8 that puts out 342 horsepower and launches the 4900 lb SUV from 0-60mph in just a tick over 6 seconds.  Few 4x4 vehicles without an SRT badge can keep up

See a faster kid hauler with lots of ground clearance?

  2. That's an intruging option. Bummer the link is broken (ad removed by author)... But I offer another option to the 'lead foot soccer mom'... The 2006 - 2012 Rav-4 v6.... 270hp in a lighter, more reliable package w/ less miles, gets you 0-60 in 6.5 seconds... You can get a 2006/07 v6 Rav-4 for around $13-14 K, w/o experiencing the joys of German electrical gremlins, and a bruised jaw, when it drops to the floor, when those repair bills start rolling in.... Average Bear has spoken.... Have a nice weekend...

    1. I had no idea the Rav-4 was so powerful, especially considering that every Rav-4 on the road lumbers around at exactly 5mph below the speed limit.

    2. That's a broad brush you paint with, eh? Yes, the Rav-4 is common; so common you can drive fast and not get noticed so much by the cops. My friend brags about his BMW x3, (when it's not at the dealership getting fixed for the 5th time). I smile and keep racking up the fast, trouble-free miles.

  3. No interior photos, no mileage. Pass. (Even if it didn't look like a minivan from the rear.)

  4. These are cheaply built and appointed by comparison to any RX. Made hurriedly in Alabama. I would rather have a Rav4!
