20k: Cold War Tactical Command Post: 1972 Land Rover Series III Carawagon Field Command

The Sugga from earlier today had us dreaming about classic military vehicles and the only problem is a lack of space for maps and planning in something like a TP-21 or hummer.  Sure, you can forge great rivers and withstand small arms fire, but where do you put your maps, tactical charts and the big board?  Luckily for us, tipper extraordinaire Kaibeezy sent us the perfect vehicle.  Find this 1972 Land Rover Series III Carawagon Field Commanders Tactical Command Post for sale in Sonoma, CA offered for $20,000 via craigslist.

The Land Rover Series III was a heavy duty 4x4 inspired by the Willys Jeep, but it didn't become a Tatical Command Post unitl Carawagon in the UK enclosed the rear bed area into a wagon and added a big table for maps and things.

The name Tactical Command Post sounds more impressive than it really is...but for all we know the world could have been obliterated by nukes from a single radio call from this TCP.   Just don't let any commies into this beast because they'll see the everything...they'll see the big board!

The seller details much about this LR (with the notable exception of the model year...unless I missed it - thanks to Alan Brand for reminding us that craigslist added a year field to its lisings) and then concludes with the statement  "Beneficial disclosure with purchase..."   Gotta wonder what that means.  See a better mobile home and command center for less?

  1. (literally) Right next to the picture in the ad ... 1972 Land Rover 109GS

  2. Lack of space for maps in a HMMWV? FBCB2 begs to differ. Also, the transmission tunnel in a HMMWV, when not being used to rack out or otherwise sham while on duty, can be used as a map table. Same with the hood, though I don't suggest this whilst in motion or when transporting c-wire.

  3. Land Rovers have had always served the country with pride. Well Alan, I am also crazy about series 2 and 3 land rovers just like you. I was browsing through the web to find out some great models just like this one and I found this Land Rover series 2 – marine blue color. Have a look here -

  4. I've read your post "20k: Cold War Tactical Command Post: 1972 Land Rover Series III Carawagon Field Command". Very informative!
