10k: EldoRADo: 1996 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible Custom, Low Miles

The 11th generation of Cadillac's Eldorado mid-sized 2-door personal luxury coupe was introduced in 1992 and shuffled around aimlessly until the plug was finally pulled in 2002.  It had been 35 years since the Eldorado had shed its classic rear-drive setup and became a front-drive tire burning luxury coupe.  The front-drive setup allowed the GM E-body (shared with post '79 Buick Riviera and Olds Toronado) to focus on providing a large cabin space free of transmission humps.  Most buyers of the E-body were more concerned with missing the latest episode of Matlock than missing rear-drive handling dynamics, but eventually the magazine pundits and GM management killed this front drive dinosaur in the name of Nürburgring lap times.  Find this 1996 Cadillac Eldorado custom convertible for sale in Marietta, GA currently bidding on ebay for $9,750 reserve-not-met with a few hours to go.

It isn't like I want to drive a front-wheel-drive anything, but a car in the personal luxury segment should not need strong performance creds to be successful.  Tuning, ride, handling need to be on the soft side because it is a boat.  Cadillacs from this era didn't sell well because they had hideous green LED odometers and ancient styling - not because they couldn't pull 1g on a skid pad.  The performance-performance-performance mantra that spews from the talking heads at Cadillac is appealing to a small group of speed demons, but most buyers just want something nice that won't fall apart in 6 weeks, or cause pregnant women to go into labor.  It should also have a cup holder that will fit a venti Starbeans coffee cup.

The rear view mirror...whoa...nice garage dude.  E-type, Shelby, Ferrari, Lotus. I should go back and give a serious beat down on my old high school guidance counselor because I am in the wrong line of business.  I want to be this guy.

Back to the car - Cadillac never built an Eldorado convertible after 1985, but that didn't stop Quality Craft Industrial Inc Specialty Vehicles in Toledo, OH from hacking the top off this coupe and making it into a decent looking convertible.

Power comes from a 4.6 liter Northstar V8 that puts out 300 horsepower into a 4-speed automatic gearbox attached to the front wheels.
