15k: Super Coupe: 1991 BMW 850i E31 V12 6-spd

The E31 chassis BMW 8-series was an upmarket grand tourer from BMW, their first attempt in many years at building a real luxury halo car.  It cost more than $70,000 in 1990 money when new and featured the latest in automotive technology..which is now obsolete and falling apart, and therefore prices are nice.  Find this 1991 BMW 850i V12 6-spd for $16,750 in Novato, CA via craigslist.  Another Bay Area Bimmer from Kaibeezy.

The E31 8-series were only built in small quantities from 1989-1999, but you will see some on the street from time to time.  They do have numerous potentially expensive problems, so finding a good one that has had all its maintenance and isn't about to blow a tranny is a good first step.

The 850i is powered by the M70B50, a 5.0 liter V12 that puts 295 horsepower and 330 ft-lbs of torque into a 6-speed manual transmission.  The inside shows some wear for its 97k miles, but would probably clean up with a thorough scrubbing.

Always use a proper private party inspection service when looking at a vehicle as complex as an 850i, unless you are whiz with BMW electronics; the dual-drive-by-wire throttle setup is baffling to even the most skilled mechanics.

  1. When the engine asplodes or the trans or electrical dont do their thing anymore just rip out everything that BMW did and redo it with the GM performance catalog. and order a tremac six while yer at it. Then the thing should be a decent powerful grand tourer.

  2. These things demand hellacious amounts of maintenance. A few years ago, a buddy bought a 40k mile, beautifully maintained '98 840Ci and still puts close to $4-5000 a year into it (and has for 3 years). It's a fatass, but drifts like a princess when convinced.

  3. ~ V12, 6spd, wine red, mighty tempting. so many pluses. although the thought of an aluminum LS w/ 6spd sounds entertaining i wouldn't consider spending $16,500 for a car to swap. the V8 might outrun it in 1320, but the GM would run out of breath at a lower top speed.
i've owned '80-'90s BMWs that were extremely reliable, just keep up with care. "PRIVATE OWNER WITH SERVICE/MAINTENANCE RECORDS" doesn't necessarily mean one-owner or all records, but maybe -
. hey, Kaibeezy, have you driven or inspected the 850?
