5k Flash: Thor's Calabash: 1966 SAAB 96 2-Stroke

The calabash was the one of the first cultivated foods in the world, grown over 8,000 years ago for use as a vessel for holding fluids and known as the 'bottle gourd.'   The exterior color of the calabash isn't exactly what you'd expect on a sporting automobile, but it is essentially what was used on a number of classic 60s/70s machines.  Find this 1966 SAAB 96 2-Stroke covered in a gourdgeous shade of green for sale in SF Bay Area, CA for $6,500 via craigslist.  Thanks to tip from Kaibeezy T.

This SAAB 96 is powered by a 841cc two stroke three cylinder engine that puts out a paltry 46 horsepower...but according to the seller it 'SCREAMS LIKE A GOOD TWO STROKE SHOULD.'  Apparently the seller, CAPTAIN CAPSLOCK also SCREAMS LIKE A GOOD CRAIGSLISTER SHOULD.  Toggle the capslock key and nobody gets hurt...

There isn't much to go from this advertisement, but the 96 looks to have  decent paint job and if it runs/drives and is rust free, the asking price is extremely fair.  This is one of those times where a bad ad is a good thing...

  1. Looks like a screamin' deal (pun intended). Seriously, if this is rust-free, it is a good deal on a very cool car. These are a hoot to drive, and this one is already on its way to a vintage rally look. I would not go much further, but maybe a just a tad.

Too bad they put San Francisco so far away from me...

  2. I wonder if this one is a free wheeler where the clutch disengages when you let off the gas? Anyway, I really love the old 2 stroke Saabs. This one would drive the global warming folks crazy with the nice
blue smoke coming out of the back.
