25k: Prancing Hyundai: 1978 Ferrari 308 GT4 2+2

The Ferrari 308 GT4 was a 2+2 continuation of the Dino line and wasn't decorated with Ferrari badges until after 1976 (it used the Dino name because il Commendatore insisted that a Ferrari should have a V12 mounted up front.)  The 308 GT4 is surprisingly inexpensive for a car with the Prancing Horse logo and costs about as much as a new Hyundai Genesis coupe.  Find this 1978 Ferrari 308 GT4 for sale in Costa Mesa, CA currently bidding on ebay for $22,100 with less than one day to go.

The 308 GT4 was an anomaly because it was the first Ferrari to be designed by Bertone instead of Pininfarina. Regardless, it is a fantastic looking car and much more dramatic than its successor the Mondial.

The 308 is powered by a 3.0 liter V8 mounted between the axles putting out 250 horsepower.  It was the first mid-engine V8 powered production car from Ferrari and laid the groundwork for years of successful V8 midships cars from Maranello.

The insides look classic '70s Ferrari and are in nice shape.  Unfortunately minor problems with things like climate controls or switches can cost major bones in a Ferrari and they were built for speed/style, not longevity.

We aren't suggesting that a buyer would cross-shop between a Hyundai Genesis Coupe and a Ferrari 308 GT4, but it is interesting to point out that you could have either for the same amount of cash. Unfortunately the 308 GT4 will eat your trust fund up quickly with routine maintenance but you'd be the coolest kid in school for a while.

  1. I'd like the wheels for my vintage Volvo. Same bolt pattern!

  2. Damn you, DT. I need this about as much as I need a Mirena but I have always loved the Bertone Ferraris. I have watched them on LCD screens of small size and only while seated next to my wife, that way I am always too terrified to lose my sanity for but a moment and hit the 'buy it now' button. That wedge is just so choice in all the right ways, the perfect expression of 70s speed writ pure.

  5. Sold for $22,600. Not a bad price for a Bertone Ferrari.
