5k: Oldsmoboat Racer: 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva Vintage Racer

Vintage racing (and automobile racing in general) is typically reserved for those folks with buckets of spare cash.  A playground for the 'suits' in the world to do parade laps around tracks in their vintage cars with carefully maintained patina.  Today's feature vintage racer is streching the bounds of what one may call 'vintage,' but won't drain your wallet.  This 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva vintage racer is for sale in Ft Lauderdale, FL currently bidding on ebay for $2553 reserve-not-met.

At twenty years young, this front drive family sedan isn't going to impress the Allard crowd at next year's Monterey Historics, or even get through the parking gate of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.  It will, however, be gladly welcomed at smaller 'historic' gatherings, track days, and could even qualify for the 24 Hours of LeMons with an appropriate level of judicial bribery...not the local traffic court envelope of $20s, but we are talking supreme court sized briefcases full of cash.

This Achieva (pictured above) is said to have raced in the Firehawk series and later IMSA events, but now wears SCCA ITS badges and is likely a decent weekend track rat.  It is powered by a GM Quad-4 engine of undisclosed build specs - but probably makes about 200 horsepower by our estimation.

It's got a standard race-car interior, complete with cage, race seat, quick-release steering wheel, halo fire extinguishing system, diamond plate floor panels and a bevy of aftermarket gauges.

This Olds isn't a bad way to get into racing and would certainly cost more than the current bidding price to build your own.

  1. "Oldsmobile" "Front-wheel drive" "Racecar"

One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong....
