5k: 1995 BMW 540i M-Sport

We just featured a e39 BMW 540i yesterday and while some would say it is too soon to feature another used/abused 5-series, we say its never too soon to share a rear-wheel drive luxury sedan that today is selling for 1/10th of its original MSRP.  The e34 BMW 5-series is considerably more dated in appearance and therefore gives fast examples a 'sleeper' status since most e34s you see today are 525 automatics driven by professor types.  This rare 1995 BMW 540i M-Sport 6-spd is not a car to drive your Yorkie to the pet salon, on the way to the used book store - it is a legitimate hoon-mobile and for sale in Fresno, CA for $5499 via craigslist.

5k: 1978 Saab 99 Turbo

In 1978 SAAB introduced a remarkable automobile, the 99 Turbo - it wasn't the first turbocharged automobile to be introduced to the general public, the 1962 Olds Jetfire Turbo Rocket has that honor, but it was the first mass produced turbocharged automobile produced in any substantial volumes and the Jetfire used a complicated anti-detonation methyl alcohol injection system.  The 99 Turbo on the other hand looked and drove like any other vehicle except for the hiss and delayed push of a small Garrett T04 turbocharger.  This 1978 SAAB 99 Turbo is offered for sale in Portland, OR for $5000 via craigslist and looks to be a decent stock daily driver.

10k Flash: 1997 BMW 540i 6-spd

The BMW 5-series was well established as the upper end luxury/sports sedan to have when the e39 series was introduced in 1995.  Most were ordered with automatic transmissions but a few lucky individuals picked up the 540i V8 model mated to a 6-spd manual transmission - basically a poor man's M5.  These are still somewhat desirable today - although with prices of e39 M5s still dropping, its hard to justify the 540i-6spd unless it is in fantastic shape and a great deal.  This 1997 BMW 540i 6spd is for sale in the SF Bay area for $8500 via Craigslist (thanks to tip from Kaibeezy T)

10k Flash: 1973 AMC Matador; ¡Olé!

The Matador replaced the Rebel in 1971 as American Motor Corp's plus sized muscle coupe.  By 1973 the muscle-car era was on its way out and the replacement cars tended to be softer, slower and are generally less collectable today - but don't rule them out of your classic search as they are also considerably cheaper.  This 1973 AMC Matador is about the nicest around and offered for sale in Shawsville, VA currently bidding on ebay for the modest price of $6,100 with 3 days to go.

15k: 1979 Lotus Esprit - John Player Special

The Lotus Esprit (es-spree) enjoyed a remarkably long life with only minor changes in its 28 year lifespan and over 10,000 examples built from 1976-2004.  In 1979 Lotus released a special edition - the John Player Special to commemorate its 1978 F1 world championship winning car - really just a stickers package - but cool nonetheless.  This 1979 Lotus Esprit John Player Special is offered for sale in Knoxville, TN currently bidding on ebay at $13,799 with one day to go.

10k: 1987 Chevy El Camino SS; Minty Clean

The fifth generation Chevy El Camino was built on GM's G-platform and shared components with all manner of Chevy Malibu, Olds Cutlass, Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Regal.  What the rest of these cars lacked was pickup truck utility and a die-hard fan base in the Hispanic urban communities in most major American cities. If you want a sweet stock El Camino, it would be best to get the cleanest, newest example you can find - this (last year of production) 1987 Chevy El Camino is offered for sale in Lakeland, FL currently bidding for $8,100 with no reserve and 2 days to go.

5k Flash: 1969 BMW 2002 Creamsicle Dream- Cheap!

There are a couple of rules for getting top dollar for your crappy car on ebay - first is to make sure that people are available/awake when the auction closes and second is to be positive about the car.  The seller of this 1969 BMW 2002 breaks these rules and the car is going to sell for a bargain in a few hours (the middle of the night), car located in Washington D.C., and currently bidding at $2,750 with 9 hrs to go.

10k: 1972 Porsche 914 2.0, Minty Clean

The Porsche 914 was originally built as a dual purpose range topping Volkswagen and low-end Porsche, but was only sold as a Porsche. It was the Eduardo Saverin of the automotive world - financially successful, does a great job, contributed lots to the automotive scene...but overshadowed by a famous headliner- the 911.  Today 914s are cheap and you don't need to be a Zuckerberg to own a really nice one.  This concours ready 1972 Porsche 914 2.0 is for sale in Boerne, TX, currently bidding on ebay for $10,801 no-reserve with 1 day to go.

15k: 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra Prototype

The Ford Torino, originally a option for the Fairlane sedan, coupe & wagon, was first introduced as a stand alone model in 1970.  Ford used the Fastback Torino as the base for their NASCAR entrants, although the actual racers shared little in common with production vehicles.  For the 1970 NASCAR season Ford started building a Ford Torino King Cobra to homolgate a new aerodynamic front end - but abandoned the project when NASCAR changed their homogation rules. This 1970 Ford Torino for sale on ebay in Calvert, TX, currently bidding for $18,701 with a few hours to go, is claimed to have a few FoMoCo prototype parts and could be an actual King Cobra prototype.

5k: 1972 Datsun 240Z, Original Owner

The first generation Nissan Z car was sold in the USA under the Datsun marque and 240Z nameplate.  It was unlike anything seen from a Japanese manufacturer before in the US market and made quite a splash when introduced.  Today used Z's are plentiful and inexpensive mostly as they haven't appreciated the way 60s American pony cars have, and you can still get decent examples for less than $10k.  This 1972 Datsun 240Z is an original owner driver for sale in Walnut Creek, CA for the bargain price of $3400 via craigslist.  (Big thanks to Kaibeezy T for the tip!)

Merry Christmas from the Daily Turismo

We at the Daily Turismo would like to take break from our regularly scheduled flow of cheap rides and critical commentary and wish all of our readers a safe and Merry Christmas with the following Irish Blessing:

During the coming Christmas season
May you be blessed with the spirit of the season,
which is peace, the gladness of the season,
which is hope, and the heart of the season which is love.

10k Flash: 1953 Studebaker 2R Pickup w/ Chevy V8

We love shopping for Christmas gifts last minute and this is really down to the wire...but here is your last chance to pickup a sweet vintage pickup and put it under the tree for someone special.  This 1953 Studebaker 2R pickup  with Chevy V8 is offered for sale in Castle Rock, CA for buy-it-now of $8,500 or best offer on ebay with less than 15 hrs to go.

15k: 1973 Pontiac GTO Sport Coupe - 3spd Manual

Many ebay sellers tend to use the tactic of giving less information and hoping the buyers gloss over any deficiencies and just feel happy to get a car that matches his make/model/price requirements.  We don't really like this method as it causes much heartache when the car is finally delivered, or better - when the buyer arrives with cash and still has the option of walking away.  The much better approach is to over-saturate the buyer with photos and information and hope that the person who buys the car does weigh all pros vs. cons and is ultimately happy with the purchase.  Today's feature is an exercise in over-saturation of information and will take a large chunk of your day to read/digest, but it is a 1973 Pontiac GTO Sport Coupe with 3spd manual transmission for sale in Bensalem, PA, currently bidding on ebay for $12,850 with less than one day to go.

10k Flash: Super Nice Original 1970 Ford F-250 Ranger XLT Camper Special

For our last Weekly Haulrismo feature we looked at a 1970 Ford pickup, of the F-100 Ranger 4WD variety. That truck sold for a very strong $13.7k on ebay, which frankly surprised us and got us looking for a better deal on a similar vintage truck. Well, we found a real gem - another 1970 Ford, as it turns out, but this one is an F-250 (heavier duty hauling / towing rating). It is a 2WD truck, which is honestly all most people will ever need in a vintage Haulrismo. The bonus here is its originality and lower buy-in - the paint is claimed to be original in its awesome tri-tone color scheme, and the seller says it's only rolled 118k miles in its 42 years. Find this minty show-quality survivor for sale here on craigslist in San Diego, CA, for $10k asking price.

15k Mayan Carpocalypse: 1967 Dodge Monster Pickup Truck

Unless the Mayan apocalypse is planned for another time zone, 12/21/12 has come and gone without any major episodes of carnage, unless you consider the inevitable divorce of Demi-Kutcher an ill sign.  We do think the divorce is a sign of good things and therefore want to celebrate that the world didn't end by jumping a monster truck off of a huge ramp and re-entering the atmosphere at such a speed as to turn into a world ending impact with the surface.  The clear winning choice of monster truck for sub-orbital duty is this 1967 Dodge Monster Show Truck currently bidding on ebay for $17,600 with 1 day to go.

15k: Previously Featured 1972 Volvo 1800E Auction Closes Today

We have already featured the minty clean 1972 Volvo 1800E that DT regular Tamas is offering on ebay.  However, we did want to remind anyone who is interested that this auction ends today.  Today is your last chance to pickup one of the sweetest looking Volvo 1800s we've seen recently, currently bidding on ebay here for just under $14k.

20k Mayan Carpocalypse: GRX Interceptor, Originally $1.8 Million

If you thought the Mayan Carpocalypse was behind us...well you'd be wrong because we spend good effort on that logo image and it won't just be used once a year like the ill-fated loony-labor-day theme.  Here to continue the preparation for the end of days is a car built for one of the horsemen of the apocalypse - a undisclosed model year GRX Interceptor, built by Tommy 'The Greek' Mouzes, and now for sale in Lancaster, CA, currently bidding on ebay for $20,100 reserve-not-met with less than 1 day to go.

DT COW: Commenter of the Week: Yuppie Hate

Its Friday and the end of the world, or so we've heard. While we haven't seen any comets or asteroids yet, we have seen the process of human evolution slowly reversing itself...but that is a discussion for another time.  First, we want to say that is is so easy to hate yuppies as a symbol of 90's extravagance, but we must not also hate the things that yuppies loved as guilt by association isn't a good thing.  Clearly the E21/E30 BMW 3-Series was a symbol of the young urban professional and we want to applaud one commenter for his twice posted (twice posted!) comment about this week's clean E21:    This in one of the few yuppymobiles that I do not hate.
